ICT Courses

ICT to support literacy (formally The Reading & Writing Process using ICT)

This Summer course for 2017 from PDST TiE will investigate a wide range of easy to use, practical online resources which can build and foster pupils' skills in reading comprehension, oral language, writing and vocabulary at all class levels.

It will also explore how ICT can be used to support and develop key elements of literacy by developing a digital portfolio of sample teaching, learning and assessment resources for all class levels over the week.

Each module makes reference to classroom based examples of using ICT to support differentiation so as to cater for our pupils’ varying learning abilities and SEN needs. Other relevant areas discussed during this course include building safer internet practices in my school, integrating technologies in literacy intervention programs as well as planning for e-learning and SSE on a whole school level.

Using Tablet Devices for Literacy and Numeracy

A revamped and revised summer course for 2017 from PDST TiE centered on the purposeful use of tablet technologies, namely the iPad, and how it can be used to support teaching and learning in the Irish primary classroom.

Firstly, teachers will examine the key educational and whole-school considerations in the deployment of tablet technologies through a range of participant oriented tasks and activities. Participants will explore areas such as developing literacy and numeracy lessons with tablet devices, investigating accessibility and SEN practices in Irish classrooms before planning for the possible integration of tablet devices across the wider curriculum.

The course will also explore how tablet devices can be used to develop whole school assessment practices by developing a portfolio of sample teaching and learning resources for all class levels over the week. Finally, the development of safer internet practices and whole school planning for e-learning will be also be prioritised throughout the course.

Participants are required to bring their own/school activated tablet (iPad) for the duration of the course.

Embedding ICT in the Primary Classroom

This Summer Course for 2017 from PDST TiE will introduce teachers at all class levels to ways in which ICT can be easily integrated into daily teaching practices. The course will investigate the use of a range of literacy, numeracy and wider curriculum related websites and resources which can add to active learning in the primary classroom.

Over the duration of the course teachers will be guided through the process of creating a wide range of teaching, learning and assessment based digital resources which they can use in their own classrooms.

Other key areas of course content to be discussed and developed include the importance of safer internet practices in the school environment, finding and selecting good quality educational content online, developing whole school assessment practices through the use of ICT and finally planning for e-learning practices to complement current SSE practices in your school.

Using ICT for Literacy and Numeracy in the Junior Classes

This summer course for 2017 engages teachers in a hands on approach to using ICT in the junior classroom. Each module includes practical use of online resources, tools and programmes to promote ICT integration so as to develop and support children's learning in literacy and numeracy.

Each module refers to classroom based examples of differentiation so as to cater for our pupils’ varying learning abilities and SEN needs across the curriculum. Many modules also provide participants with opportunities to investigate project based learning. Throughout the course we will look at developing safe and responsible internet use, promoting and developing e-learning as well as integrating ICT in current SSE initiatives in your school.

Finally, relevant classroom based examples of collaborative and cooperative work in infant classrooms will be explored throughout the week by all participants as they plan for the use of ICT to support teaching, learning and assessment in their own classrooms.

A Whole School Approach To Using ICT

Learning first, technology second: leading digital learning in your school

If you are asking yourself the following…...

What does technology enhanced learning look like?

How do I use technology effectively and appropriately in my teaching/school?

What might ongoing assessment using technology (including the use of ePortfolios) look like   How do I plan for technology enhanced learning?

…...then this is the Summer Course for you. This course is for both current and aspiring school leaders as well as teachers with an interest in leading digital learning in their school. The course explores the benefits and potential of technology to extend and enhance the learning experience of pupils in the 21st century. It explores our understanding of technology enhanced learning, proving insights into effective and appropriate practice.

The course explores Digital Citizenship and what this means for students, teachers and school leaders.  It examines how pupils can be supported to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our digital world. It also explores pedagogical considerations and tools to enhance learning.

Through its leadership focus, participants will develop their own vision for learning, explore the change considerations for this vision to be realised and how to plan for this change.

Computational Thinking

This course introduces teachers to the concepts of computational thinking and coding to develop student’s problem solving skills. Participants will explore a combination of “offline” and “online” activities that will focus on the development of student’s problem solvig abilities. Teachers will learn how the methodologies of computational thinking are fundamental to developing the problem-solving skills of reasoning, integrating and connecting and communicating and expressing.

Teachers will use and develop a variety of offline lessons that can be used without any need for computers. The course will also use STEM-focused manipulatives such as Lego and Bee-Bots that can be incorporated into teaching and learning from the infant classroom up to sixth class. While primarily focusing on problem solving skills for Mathematics the course will look at ways that computational thinking methodologies can be used across curricular areas.

Participants are required to bring their own laptop.
