Edmark Reading Programme for children in SET and SEN

Please note that this course is a repeat of the course that was held on 29th September 2022
This course will provide an introduction to the Edmark Reading Programme, which is particularly effective in supporting children with Autism, children with working memory difficulties and children who continue to struggle with reading after prolonged instruction with phonics and blending.
The course will provide an overview of the materials in Edmark levels 1 and 2 and will provide guidance on selecting students who might be suited to Edmark. It will introduce the rationale and teaching strategies of Edmark, explain the use of the Edmark Mastery Test as an assessment tool and provide insight from teachers with extensive experience working with Edmark. The course will also describe approaches to implementing Edmark in SET and SEN settings and will provide opportunities for participants to review the resources included in the Edmark programme boxes.
Learning Outcome
Participants will be enabled to:
- Describe the rationale and benefits of the Edmark Reading programme
- Identify students who would benefit from the Edmark Programme
- Become familiar with with the materials and teaching methods of the Edmark Programme
- Develop strategies for implementing the Edmark Programme in an SET or SEN setting.
This course will be delivered by Nicola O'Lone and Elaine Stapleton.
Nicola has been teaching for 17 years, with 8 years experience in SET. She is currently undertaking a Masters Degree in Systemic Family Therapy.
Elaine has been teaching for 14 years, with 7 years experience teaching in an Autism class. She has completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Special Education.
Nicola and Elaine teach in Scoil na Naomh Uilig, an inclusive primary school in Newbridge with 24 mainstream classes, 3 Autism classes and 2 Severe and Profound classes.
