22KEC211 Supporting Children with Sensory Processing Difficulties in the Classroom via Zoom

Would you like to learn about children’s sensory needs?

Together with other teachers you will learn to understand more about the sensory systems and find solutions to sensory behaviours which may be causing stress at school. The workshops include practical strategies for sensory regulation to maximise learning.

Who should attend these workshops?

The workshops are aimed at teachers of children aged 3-12, with sensory processing difficulties which may be part of Sensory Processing Disorder, Autism, ADHD, or other conditions.

Session outline:

Part 1

  • The senses – how each sense works
  • Sensory processing – how all the senses work together to process information.
  • Sensory processing and managing emotions
  • The impact of stress on sensory processing.
  • Common sensory processing difficulties in children with Autism.  

Part 2

  • Setting up a sensory friendly environment.
  • Using sensory equipment – when, why and how?
  • How to use visual timetables and social stories to support children with sensory processing difficulties.
  • Managing tricky behaviours

Part 3


  • Brainstorming worksheet for how to manage behaviours that challenge in the classroom with case examples.
  • Participant’s case studies and discussion. 

About the Facilitators:

Inés Lawlor

Inés graduated from the University of Salford (U.K.) in 1999 with a higher second-class honours degree in Occupational Therapy.  She chose to specialize in the area of paediatrics in 2002 and has been working with children with learning, sensory, emotional and behavioural difficulties in different settings, for the past 18 years.  She has a special interest in how sensory processing affects a child’s participation in functional (every-day) skills particularly within the education setting. She has recently completed a Masters in Children and Youth studies through the School of Education in UCD (2018). 

Inés has written several books and products for children published through LDA: Max and Me: A Story about Sensory Processing, Dexter and Me: A Story about Motor Coordination, Sensory Shuffle, Target Ladders (Sensory Processing) and Start with Art all of which are aimed at primary school teachers. Helen O’Connor

Helen graduated in teaching in 1986 and in the intervening years has worked abroad and in Ireland specialising in the area of Special Education.   She has worked with children with emotional and behavioural difficulties, mild and moderate learning difficulties, autism and a range of other needs.  Helen has worked both as part of a special education team supporting children in mainstream primary classes and as a special class teacher. Helen is always searching for and developing practical ways of supporting children with sensory issues in the classroom.
