Thursday 16th September, 14th October & 11th November from 7.30pm-9pm
September 16th 7.30pm to 9pm: This month we will look at a selection of perennial vegetables such as Asparagus, Kale, Cabbages and Spinach suitable for the school garden which will come back year after year with minimal maintenance. This will help when planning what edibles to grow in the school garden.
October 14th 7.30pm to 9pm: This month we will cover how to grow a few hardy annual vegetables that can grow outdoors through the winter months and how to prepare the vegetable beds for the winter months. We will also look at pruning and mulching.
November 11th 7.30pm to 9pm: This Month we will look in detail at the various ways to make beautiful compost for the school garden using cones or an open bay system. We will look at all the potential problems and how to avoid flies, smell and vermin and what we can and can't be added in. We will also look at making leaf mould compost.
Facilitator: Patrick Hunt is a Gardening and Biodiversity specialist. He designs gardens, teaches gardening classes and run workshops for schools and community groups all with nature and sustainability in mind. He has a deep knowledge of food growing, plants that support wildlife and how to design beautiful spaces that fulfill a range of functions. He has facilitated summer courses approved by the DES on “Biodiversity and Gardening in Schools”.
