This two-part online course, aimed towards Junior Cycle teachers, will introduce teachers to ArcGIS Online, an Esri mapping and story-mapping platform that allows for dynamic and digital storytelling with custom maps, analysis tools and more. All resources are free to use for teachers and students in Ireland through the ArcGIS for Schools programme. This workshop will demonstrate advantages and techniques to teaching sustainable development goals using satellite data from the ESA Copernicus programme and resources from Ordnance Survey Ireland.
For students, story-maps and other interactive tools supported in ArcGIS Online provide an opportunity to learn how information is collected, analysed, and mapped to solve real-world problems in Ireland and elsewhere. In the classroom, through these activities, students can
(i) learn about specific concepts, events and other topics in the curriculum in interactive and engaging ways
(ii) experience how looking at the world and collecting data can be used to make hypotheses, think about concepts, and address real-world problems, and
(iii) engage with how satellite data, Ordnance Survey Ireland work and other sources can be used to solve challenges in Ireland today with a focus on the United National Sustainable Development Goals.
In these workshops, teachers will gain access and receive training on using satellite data and Ordnance Survey Ireland data for developing classroom activities and will receive a Certificate of Completion of the 5*S teacher workshop, a joint programme between Maynooth University, Ordnance Survey Ireland, TU Dublin, Esri Ireland and the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland. 5*S is funded by the Science Foundation Ireland and ESERO Ireland. Workshops are also specifically tailored for the Junior Cycle subject curriculum, with specific material currently provided for geography, science and history subject curriculum.
